Greetings! I've been playing guitar and drums for the past 23 years and have been mixing rock and metal for the past 17 years. Some of my favorite bands are Alice in Chains, Avenged Sevenfold, Def Leppard, Disturbed, Gamma Ray, Guns N’ Roses, Linkin Park, Megadeth, Metallica, Rammstein, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, Van Halen, and Velvet Revolver.

No matter what I do, my mixes alway sound lackluster and like they’re missing something, but I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Can you help?

What is the difference between Mixing and Mastering?
Mixing is carefully blending all of the individual tracks using EQ, compression, reverb, delay and other tools. Mastering is the overarching EQ, compression, limiting and other techniques needed to get the song volume-competitive, industry standard and radio ready. Think of it as the final polish of a song.
How loud should my master be?
It’s entirely up to you. Most platforms like Spotify, YouTube and Apple Music will turn down your song’s volume if it’s too loud. So there’s not much point in making music overly-loud for the sake of loud. But I’m always happy to Master your songs however you like.
How do I communicate my vision to you?
Descriptor words can be helpful: air, balanced, bass, boomy, boxy, bright, clear, deep, dull, excitement, flat, harsh, hollow, mids, mud, open, presence, punchy, rumble, saturated, sibilance, sizzle, smooth, thin, thump, treble, warm, wide.
